Grenades don't define the Mercenary's pace at the start of Path of Exile 2; movement and weapon quality do. Early zones feel far more manageable when freeze control buys time for a crossbow that's still catching up, and having enough Path of Exile 2 Currency for sensible campaign upgrades can prevent the build from stalling around awkward boss fights. The reward is a progression route that gradually shifts from cautious cold ammunition into fast Explosive Shot clearing, without demanding a complete respec every few acts.

Cold Control Before the Build Finds Its Rhythm

Permafrost Bolts and Fragmentation Rounds carry the early campaign because they solve a survival problem as much as a damage problem. Frozen rares and slowed packs give the Mercenary room to reload, reposition, and avoid standing in bad ground. Explosive Grenade adds useful area pressure, while Flash Grenade is worth keeping for blind, stun, and emergency space. A common mistake is chasing damage supports while ignoring control; during early leveling, preventing an enemy attack can save more time than a small increase in tooltip DPS.

Explosive Shot Makes Mapping Less Fussy

Act 2 is where the character starts feeling properly efficient. Explosive Shot should become the regular pack-clearing attack, with Explosive Grenade reserved for dense groups, durable rares, and awkward boss phases. Continuing to use the entire Act 1 rotation after this point creates button clutter and slows the clear. Keep the old cold skills only while they still provide useful control. The crossbow also deserves regular attention: a weak weapon makes every support gem and passive investment feel disappointing, so upgrade when damage noticeably falls behind rather than waiting for a perfect drop.

Mirage Archer and Gemling Defenses Shape the Endgame

Mirage Archer changes the build's action economy when Explosive Grenade is socketed into it. Automated grenade pressure continues while the player attacks or dodges, which matters in encounters where standing still is dangerous. If Spirit can't support both Mirage Archer and Herald of Ash, dropping the herald is usually the cleaner choice. Later, Cluster Grenade raises boss damage, while Oil Grenade helps with resistance pressure and can be automated through Mortar Cannon. Gemling Legionnaire supports this package with gem levels, quality, hybrid defenses, reduced movement penalties during skills, and protection from extra critical-strike damage through Gem Studded. Keep support-gem colors balanced so that benefit isn't lost.

When Spark Is a Conversion, Not a Starting Plan

The grenade setup is a practical campaign and early-endgame choice because it works with ordinary gear and improves naturally as skills unlock. Spark can become a powerful high-investment alternative, but it asks for careful energy-shield scaling, mana management, support-color balance, weapon-set control, and correct Power Charge handling around Adonia's Ego. From what I've seen, casual players will get more value from strengthening the crossbow, life, resistances, projectile levels, and grenade cooldowns before chasing luxury uniques. Experienced players may enjoy the Spark conversion later, but the grenade build remains the safer bridge into endgame content and gradual path of exile 2 trade upgrades.
